The intent of the proposed DMP program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is to enhance and standardize clinical training for medical physicists in a manner that cannot be carried out in the current PhD program in Radiological Sciences. The addition of this new degree is in response to a nationwide movement over the past decade that is geared to improve and standardize clinical training of medical physicists. The DMP degree awarded shall be similar to other professional doctorates currently offered in other health professions, such as Physical Therapy (DPT), Audiology (AudD) and Pharmacy (PharmD). The proposed DMP program would upgrade the current MS program in medical physics, adding two years of standardized clinical training, while allowing students in the existing PhD program in Radiological Sciences to focus on achieving the skills and knowledge required to establish their careers as research scientists.

The DMP will be an entry-level professional doctoral qualification that shall enable recipients to be eligible to sit for ABR Certification examinations in therapeutic radiological physics and diagnostic radiological physics in order to obtain a state license to practice medical physics in Texas after several years of clinical experience.
