Director of the Graduate Program
From Radiological Sciences
Director's Welcome
Geoffrey Clarke, Ph.D. Professor and Vice-Chair
Welcome to the Graduate Program in Radiological Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. The Radiological Sciences Program is one of fifteen graduate programs at the institution and the only one directly housed in a department of the Medical School. The Radiology Department of the Medical School serves as the administrative home for the program but faculty come from several departments in the Graduate School, Medical and Dental School. The faculty focuses on training Medical Physicists and other Radiation Scientists by teaching the existing body of knowledge for these specialties while expanding that body of knowledge through their original research.
Research activities in the program, encompass most of the active areas of contemporary radiological sciences, are initiated by faculty and students. Brief descriptions of available research facilities and publications of graduate students can be found on this website as well as descriptions of other aspects the grduate program. The past record of innovation and creativity of the faculty has created an environment in which cutting edge student research is not only possible but actively encouraged.
The program encourages active participation of both the students as well as the faculty in the program administration to promote continuous evolution towards the goal of excellence. Student representation on the Committee on Graduate Studies insures fairness, good decisions and improved academic productivity. In addition a biannual faculty/student retreat is used to focus the attention of all members of the academic community on potential problem areas. Students are also encouraged and supported to participate in regional and national scientific meetings of interest to their selected specialization.
The activities of the program are designed to develop the professional, didactic and scientific/investigational skills of students and faculty. In addition to research and professional training within the University proper the program also provides opportunities for additional exceptional opportunities through associated institutions using the concepts of a university without walls. These programs allow work and research at institutions such as: Brooke Army Medical Center, Wilford Hall Medical Center, University of Texas at San Antonio, Audie Murphy Veterans Administration Medical Center, the Cancer Therapy and Research Center and the Texas Cancer Center in San Antonio. Collaborative teaching efforts have also been made with Baylor University in Houston, the Instituto Nacional de Investigationes Nucleares and Hospital General de Mexico in Mexico City. Such opportunities are especially important in providing professional work experience for medical physics graduates.
We thank you for visiting our web site and hope that it has provided the information you need about our program. Those of you who are prospective students are encouraged to contact us directly if you have remaining questions concerning the appropriateness of Radiological Sciences at San Antonio to fulfilling your educational needs.
Best Regards,
Geoffrey Clarke, PhD
