Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS)
From Radiological Sciences
The Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS), made up of the FACULTY, acts on such matters as curriculum procedures, admission of students, and other pertinent policy considerations for the Graduate Program in Radiological Sciences.
The Chairman of COGS, is elected by the COGS membership. This committee membership also includes a student representative who acts as a liasion, informing the students regarding activities of the Radiological Sciences Program. The student representative is elected each August by the graduate students in Radiological Sciences and serves a one year term beginning in September.
There are 11 standing subcommittees of the COGS that take care of the business of The Graduate Program between COGS meetings. Membership of these committees is reviewed on an annual basis with the COGS giving its approval. The following reports are given at each COGS meeting:
- The Application Review Committee (currently chaired by Beth Goins) reports on applications for admission to The Graduate Program and recommends their acceptance or denial.
- The Qualifying Examination Committee (currently chaired by Mustapha Hatab and consisting of the Chairs of the Curriculum Committees) develops policies and procedures for the Qualifying Examinations and also reports on administrative details to the COGS. After completion of the first two parts of the Qualifying Examinations, the Chair of the Qualifying Examination Committee reports on the results to the COGS and makes recommendations for passing, conditioning or failing on behalf of the Committee. The COGS then officially makes these decisions. Also, an ad-hoc Qualifying Examination Committee is established for each student, which consists of a group of faculty advisors, who recommend approval of the student’s Grant Proposal/Dissertation Proposal, and the Chair of the standing Qualifying Examination Committee. Again these recommendations must be certified by the COGS. Members of this ad-hoc committee often form the core group for the student’s Dissertation Advisory Committee.
- The Recruiting Committee (currently chaired by Geoffrey Clarke) responds to inquiries by prospective students and coordinates recruiting events carried out by faculty members and students at undergraduate programs in a variety of schools.
- The Mexico Medical Physics Committee (currently chaired by Gary Fullerton) is a special committee that was set up to advise and facilitate the training of professional medical physicists in Mexico. Committee members have established telecourses with medical physics education programs at universities in Mexico, worked within the structure of the Southwest Chapter of the AAPM to promote joint meetings with Medical Physics professional groups in Mexico and brought in Mexican graduate students for clinical rotations in the summer. Two alumni of The Graduate Program, one PhD and one MS, are practicing medical physicists in Mexico.
- The Alumni Committee (currently chaired by Carlos Esquivel) tracks the whereabouts of former students and faculty members of The Graduate Program and organizes events for the alumni at national and regional professional and scientific meetings.
- The six Curriculum Committees of The Graduate Program are responsible for reviewing curricula and developing courses, reviewing student applications and producing qualifying exam test items for each of the six tracks. These are:
Applications for new faculty members to The Graduate Program can be considered at any COGS meeting throughout the year. Any active member of the COGS may sponsor a new faculty member by writing a letter to the COGS Chair, explaining the role that the new faculty member would play, providing a CV and other documentation of the candidate’s qualifications to fulfill the proposed role. Membership is determined by majority vote of the COGS. The Program Director then submits paperwork to the GSBS for appointment to the GSBS faculty and to the Medical School for appointment to the Radiology Department faculty in the Medical School. The GSBS initiates a background check and an official transcript is requested from the institution which granted the new faculty member her/his most advanced degree.
GSBS requirements and special requirements of The Graduate Program are summarized in the “Guide for Graduate Studies in Radiological Sciences”. This guide is updated following the annual curriculum review and distributed to all faculty and students formally accepted into The Graduate Program. The office of the Dean of the GSBS also provides documents to assist students in preparing submissions of dissertations and theses. The Registrar of the University maintains official matriculation records for students. In addition, The Graduate Program maintains a database on the progress of graduate students through requirements of the program. Databases will be available to reviewers within the legal restrictions of the requirements for privacy.
